Questions People Actually Ask About SSP
What is the Safe and Sound Protocol?
The SSP is a five-hour listening therapy developed by Dr. Stephen Porges based on polyvagal theory. You listen to specially filtered music through headphones — it sounds like regular music, but the frequencies have been tuned to cue your nervous system toward safety instead of defense. It's not magic and it's not a cure — it's a tool for getting your nervous system unstuck.
Who is SSP actually for?
In my practice, mostly adults with chronic illness, chronic pain, trauma, burnout, or the kind of long-term dysregulation where your body won't stop bracing even when nothing's wrong. If your nervous system is stuck in "on" or "off" and regular talk therapy hasn't budged it, SSP can be a way in.
How does SSP work online?
You listen through the Unyte ILS app on your phone or laptop with over-ear wired headphones — in your own home, on your own couch, at your own pace. I set up your schedule, check in before we start, during, and after. You're not doing this in my office yet we can still do it together.
Is SSP covered by insurance?
When SSP is part of clinical counselling with me (the Therapy-Integrated option), those sessions are billed under my RCC and most extended health plans that cover RCCs will reimburse. If you're doing SSP access-only — no sessions attached — that's not clinical counselling, so insurance doesn't apply.
Is SSP safe if I have complex trauma or chronic illness?
Yes, when it's paced right. I've had clients who could only do five minutes at a time for weeks before we worked up to longer — that's fine. What causes trouble is rushing it. If your nervous system is already on fire, dumping five hours of it in quickly will backfire. Slow is the whole point.
How long does SSP take?
The Core protocol is five hours of listening total. For most of my clients, that spreads across 4 to 12 weeks — sometimes longer. We go at the speed your body can handle, not the speed the packaging says.
What's the difference between self-paced and therapist-guided SSP?
Self-paced means you get access to the music, a basic onboarding, and you're on your own — best if you're already working with a trauma-informed therapist elsewhere. Therapist-guided means you're doing SSP inside full counselling sessions with me. If you have significant trauma, chronic illness, or a fragile nervous system, do not go self-paced. You'll want someone in your corner.
Which provinces can I do SSP with you from?
I can work with clients across most of Canada — specifically British Columbia, Alberta, Manitoba, Saskatchewan, Newfoundland & Labrador, Yukon, Northwest Territories, and Nunavut. The provinces I can't currently take clients from are Ontario, Quebec, Nova Scotia, New Brunswick, and PEI — those provinces regulate counselling and I'd need local registration there. Access-only SSP programs (no clinical sessions) can be purchased from anywhere in Canada and most of the world.
