Online Therapy for ME/CFS Across Canada
Living with ME/CFS means navigating a world that was not built for your body. The fatigue is not something rest can fix, the crashes are not something willpower can prevent, and the grief of losing the life you had is real. Therapy can help — not by pushing you to do more, but by helping you build a life that works within your limits while addressing the emotional and neurological layers of this condition.
I am Elysia Bronson, a Registered Clinical Counsellor (RCC) who specializes in chronic illness therapy — and I live with chronic illness myself. I work with clients across Canada who are navigating ME/CFS, post-exertional malaise, brain fog, and the isolation that often comes with energy-limiting conditions.
Therapy For ME/CFS
-
ME/CFS affects far more than energy levels. Many people with ME/CFS also experience grief over lost identity, anxiety about symptom flares, medical trauma from being dismissed or disbelieved, strained relationships, and nervous system dysregulation that amplifies symptoms. Therapy addresses these layers — not the disease itself, but the way the disease reshapes your inner world.
This is not the kind of therapy that asks you to think positive or push through. I use a pacing-first approach that respects your energy envelope and never asks you to do more than your body can handle in a session.
-
Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) — adapted for chronic illness, focused on managing distress rather than fixing you. Dialectical Behaviour Therapy (DBT) — distress tolerance and emotional regulation skills tailored for energy-limiting conditions. Safe and Sound Protocol (SSP) — Polyvagal-informed listening therapy for nervous system regulation. Somatic pacing — gentle, body-based techniques that respect your energy limits. Trauma-informed care — especially for medical trauma and healthcare-related PTSD.
I do not use Graded Exercise Therapy (GET) or any approach that pushes you beyond your energy envelope. Your body's limits are real and I respect them.
-
For many people with ME/CFS, leaving the house for an appointment means risking a crash. Online therapy removes that barrier entirely. You can attend sessions from bed, your couch, or wherever you are most comfortable. You can adjust lighting, take breaks, and pace yourself during the session. If you are having a bad day, we adapt — we do not cancel.
Grief and Identity Loss
ME/CFS often takes away careers, social lives, hobbies, and future plans. We work through this grief without rushing it, and begin building a sense of meaning and identity that fits your life now.
What We Work On Together
Post-Exertional Malaise (PEM) Management
We develop strategies for pacing, energy budgeting, and identifying your early warning signs — so you can reduce the frequency and severity of crashes.
Anxiety and Depression
Chronic illness creates a unique kind of anxiety (Will I crash? Can I commit to this?) and depression (I cannot do what I used to). We work with these emotions using adapted CBT and DBT skills designed for people who cannot just go for a walk.
Medical Trauma
If you have been told it is all in your head, dismissed by doctors, or spent years fighting for a diagnosis, that experience leaves marks. We process the impact of medical gaslighting so it does not continue to shape how you relate to your body and the healthcare system.
Nervous System Regulation
Many people with ME/CFS have a nervous system stuck in a state of threat. Using the Safe and Sound Protocol (SSP) and somatic pacing techniques, we work to calm the autonomic nervous system — which can reduce sensory sensitivity, improve sleep quality, and support overall symptom stability.
Who I Work With
I see clients across British Columbia, Alberta, Manitoba, Saskatchewan, Newfoundland and Labrador, Yukon, Northwest Territories, and Nunavut. I am registered as a Clinical Counsellor with the BC Association of Clinical Counsellors (BCACC). I currently cannot see clients from Ontario, Quebec, Nova Scotia, New Brunswick, or PEI due to provincial registration requirements.
About Me
I am Elysia Bronson, RCC. I sit on the Board of the Canadian Pain Society and co-chair the Interprofessional Special Interest Group. I am certified in Pain Reprocessing Therapy (PRT) and the Safe and Sound Protocol (SSP). I specialize exclusively in chronic pain and chronic illness — this is not a side interest, it is my entire practice. I also live with chronic illness myself, which means I understand pacing not just as a clinical concept but as a daily reality.

Frequently Asked Questions
Do I need a referral to see you?
No. You can book directly — no referral needed.
Is online therapy effective for ME/CFS?
Yes. Research supports online delivery of CBT and other evidence-based therapies for chronic illness. Online sessions also eliminate the energy cost of travel, which is especially important for ME/CFS.
Will you try to convince me my symptoms are psychological?
Absolutely not. ME/CFS is a real, physiological condition. Therapy addresses the emotional, psychological, and neurological impact of living with it — not the validity of your experience.
Can I attend sessions from bed?
Yes. Many of my clients do. We work with wherever you are on any given day.
Is therapy covered by my insurance?
Most extended health insurance plans in Canada cover Registered Clinical Counsellors. Check with your provider to confirm your specific plan.
