Baby wildebeests can stand within six minutes of being born. Humans? Wait six minutes with a newborn and… still nothing. Standing is not our special skill. We’re born with something better: big, adaptable brains that excel at learning.

In this module you’ll see how that learning power works — neurons that fire together wire together — and how the same process can teach a brain pain. Brain-scan studies show that as pain becomes chronic, activity shifts into the brain regions for learning and memory. The pain becomes a practiced skill. That’s neuroplastic pain, and it’s the best news in this course: what a brain has learned, a brain can unlearn.

A note on sources: this course draws on The Way Out by Alan Gordon, LCSW with Alon Ziv (2021) — the book behind Pain Reprocessing Therapy — taught through my lens as a somatic-trained, SSP-certified counsellor, and as someone who lives in a chronically painful body.
